Bembridge
Our family have been out on a trip to Bembridge today, a coastal town known for its idyllic beaches and old-fashioned bays. I decided to take my camera to look at some of the locations whilst we were there, in case any settings leapt out as potential places to film.
As the photos show, the weather was very overcast and had a low mist sweeping in, creating an eerie and empty atmosphere.
This walkway is very picturesque in the spring and summer time, but the mist added a cold and rather isolated impression. I was considering this as an alternative for The Big Mead, using it for when Dylan stalks the man before his son appears. There are some good angles and long shots that I could get, as well as some chilling cutaway shots to the boats in the harbour and the ducks on the marsh. However I can't help but think that the walkway here is too long and empty, and I wouldn't be able to convincingly set up a fast pace if my characters had to get from one side to the other without spotting one another. And as much as I love the effect of the fog, I think that moving from fog in this scene to blue skies in the next setting would be too much of a contrast since the narrative timeframe is supposed to be continual. Plus, the mist and fog is more reminiscent of a horror film than a predominantly dramatic film, and so I think that a location like this is more suitable for something like Woman in Black than for what I am trying to accomplish.
I also think the likelihood of getting an occasion where there is low mist again will be a very unlikely coincidence, so I don't want to wait in hopes of getting this weather again. So as much as I like how atmospheric the setting is, I think that I will stick to my original idea of using the Big Mead because it is more accessible and easier to adapt to should the weather change.
