Ancillary Task: Magazine Review Page

Now that I have completed my short film to a standard which I believe reflects the best edit of my narrative, I am going to move on to my first ancillary task, and I have opted to create the magazine review page. The brief from the OCR exam board is:

  • A film magazine review page featuring the film
The reason I am opting to make this before the poster is because I have some previous knowledge of making magazine pages from doing a double page spread of a music magazine last year, so I think that in terms of acquired skills a magazine review page is something which won't take me too long to complete. On the other hand a poster is relatively new territory for me so I will leave that till last and spend more time on it in order to do thorough research and planning.
I look forward to applying my current knowledge of magazines and their conventions to a field which interests me more. Film journalism and reviews are something which I am an active consumer in, and I regularly read reviews from different sources to try and keep a well informed idea of a film's critical value. I like to compare how different critics react to films,  rather than just stick to one singular opinion.  Being able to make a magazine review page is very appealing because I can not only critique my own work, but also review other films that I have recently watched. Film critics often write with a humorous but sophisticated tone, showing clear knowledge about their topic but also trying to be entertaining to their readers.  Due to my interest in writing and to some extent journalism I have also attempted to write some reviews of my own in the past to see how I can apply writing to different areas, and consequently I have found that the combination of writing critically but with flair is a very difficult style to master.

For these reasons this ancillary task is one I definitely want to try my hand at, not just to visually create a review page but also to write professionally in order to make the page appear as authentic as possible to a reader.

My interpretation of this task is to make a magazine review page, featuring my own film, with the idea that it is also acceptable for me to review other films on the page, since this is a convention of film magazines.

I am a regular subscriber of both Empire and Total Film, so I have a large collection of magazines from home at my disposal. Therefore when doing my research, all of my data on conventions will be collected and sourced from my own collection, and I shall photograph the pages to upload onto the blog.
